Administrative Procedure 451
Non-Teacher and Community Coaches
Background
Students benefit from opportunities to be involved in extracurricular activities. Lloydminster Public School Division encourages all schools to have teachers and/or substitute teachers as coaches, and especially head coaches, of their extracurricular teams. However, Lloydminster Public School Division recognizes that the use of non-teacher and community coaches may be necessary to allow these activities to proceed.
An “approved” non-teacher or community coach is a coach who has been granted similar status to a teacher coach, and may work with student-athletes without a teacher present at certain times, depending on the number of years they have contributed as a non-teacher or community coach and as deemed suitable by the principal.
STAGE 1 |
First season as a volunteer non-teacher or community head coach and meets all of the requirements stated below. Coaches must have a certified teacher present at all practices, games, and tournaments. Note: Non-teacher and community assistant coaches will remain in stage 1 indefinitely. |
STAGE 2 |
Individuals have completed one successful season as a head coach within LPSD under the supervision of a certified teacher. Non-teacher and community coaches are now eligible to lead practices only independently. |
STAGE 3 |
Individuals have completed stage 2 (minimum of two sport seasons as a non-teacher or community head coach within LPSD). Non-teacher and community coaches are now eligible to coach practices, games, and tournaments independently, with the exception of overnight events. |
The principal shall be responsible for ensuring all volunteer non-teacher and community head coaches have submitted the required documentation.
